Could magnetic twisters have created the Carolina Bays?

23 Sep 09 – Today, NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft will fly a mere 142 miles above Mercury's surface to investigate its hyperactive space weather. Much attention will also be given to pictures of new craters and previously unseen terrain.

A MESSENGER flyby in 2008 revealed magnetic "tornadoes" - corkscrew-shaped twisted bundles of magnetic fields and plasma - forming in Mercury's magnetic field. “The twisters are formed (supposedly) by explosive magnetic reconnection events at the solar wind-magnetic field boundary. Solar wind can actually flow down the throats of these tornadoes to strike and erode the surface of Mercury, giving Mercury a comet-like tail.” (Note the word "explosive.")

The pink area on the image represents the boundary of Mercury's magnetic field, called the magnetopause. The tornadoes are called
"flux transfer events" (twisted lines) when they form at the magneto-pause and "plasmoids" (yellow areas) when they form in the long magnetic "tail" extending from the night-side of Mercury.

“Mercury's magnetic field is buffeted by solar wind as much as fifteen times stronger than the solar wind we experience at Earth,” says this article on spaceweather.com.
