Do cosmic rays trigger evolutionary leaps?

31 Jan 10 - "It's completely accepted in science that cosmic rays can - and do - alter DNA," says Andrew Collins in this short video. "Tiny particles of this radiation will affect our genetics, will affect our DNA."
(I agree.)

"There is a direct correlation between beryllium 10 levels recorded in ice cores in the Arctic with spurts in human development," says Collins, author of the 2006 book The Cygnus Mystery. (I agree.)

Beryllium 10 is a radioactive isotope produced in cosmic ray showers.

According to a chart in the video, there was "an incredible increase in cosmic rays about 12,000 years ago and again about 34,000 years ago - twice the level we're seeing today. (I agree.)

"Both peaks correspond to periods of great acceleration in human evolution," says Collins. "The effects of cosmic rays on our own genetics has lead to mutations within the body, within the mind, the brain, that has altered our perception of reality." (I agree.)

"As early as 1973, Carl Sagan predicted that cosmic rays would have affected human evolution," Collins continues. "The correspondence between ancient cosmic ray levels and sudden evolutionary leaps and human technology and art are facts." (I agree.)

    Story continued below

Natura non facit saltum
(Nature does not make leaps.) Charles Darwin's friend Thomas Huxley insisted that nature does take leaps. He was therefore labeled a "saltationist."

Collins goes on to propose that the mutation-causing cosmic rays in question come from the constellation Cygnus. I don't have any idea whether the cosmic rays come from Cygnus or not. I just want to know why the amounts of beryllium 10 increase so dramatically at certain times.

And that's where my book, Magnetic Reversals and Evolutionary Leaps comes in, because previous major spikes in the amounts of beryllium 10 can be correlated with magnetic reversals.

Here's a direct quote from page 53:

"Twice the normal amount of beryllium-10 is found in 60,000-
year-old ice, said G. M. Raisbeck of the Laboratoire René
Bernas in Orsay, France. Another spike in beryllim-10 occurred
about 35,000 years ago. "The dramatic difference may have
been caused by changes in magnetic intensity,” said Raisbeck,
“and may be related to the Lake Mungo magnetic excursion."
      (More about Lake Mungo later.)

"Another spike in beryllium-10 occurred 780,000 years ago
at the Brunhes magnetic reversal. Other spikes occurred at
105,000, 90,000, 68,000, and 23,000 years ago (at the Mono
Lake magnetic reversal). The most recent spike—two to three
times normal—occurred about 11,000 years ago during the
      Gothenburg magnetic reversal (Beer, 1984).

So what's going on?

Our magnetosphere protects us from those cosmic rays that Collins is talking about. As we head into a magnetic reversal (or an excursion), our magnetic-field strength decreases dramatically, to 15% of normal, thus removing our shielding.

And then - voila! - another and evolutionary leap.

As to this video, I don't know how accurate the Cygnus thing is, but overall not bad.

down
- I received the
books last night. I started
with Magnetic Reversals

I just could not put it down.

I will need to read it many
times before I can even
begin to digest the depth
of knowledge it contains.

Magnetic reversals  -  far more important than we realize

Explains what's behind Velikovsky's work
I just want to add my voice to those of your many other admiring readers.

Magnetic Reversals
is utterly brilliant. You have pulled together so many different threads that the jigsaw of trying to understand the human situation feels like it's nearing completion. Reversals even explains what's behind Velikovsky's work.

P.S. I just ordered more of your books to give to friends and colleagues :-)                                                                         - Prof. Patrick Collins
