Galactic-sized explosions fueled by magnetic forces 9 Dec 09 - After reading Magnetic Reversals and Evolutionary Leaps, one reader emailed me to say that he didn't think a magnetic reversal could cause the kinds of huge explosions in the sky that I describe in the book. Now comes this article from Space.com.
"When some very massive stars end their lives in supernova explosions, they release a surge of light known as a gamma ray burst," says Space.com writer Clara Moskowitz. The explosions can sometimes outshine a galaxy of billions of stars. "Scientists have found evidence that magnetic fields are behind these rare events," says Moskowitz. Theorists have predicted that magnetic fields could explain how gamma ray bursts (GRBs) produce jets of bright radiation that shoot out into the universe, Moskowitz continues. "But no one has observed the presence of a magnetic field in a GRB until now." On January 2 of this year, NASA's Swift satellite detected such a burst. Upon examination, researchers found polarized light in the gamma ray burst signature, which told them "that the light originated in a magnetic field." "This breakthrough observation gives us the first measurement of magnetic fields in the afterglow of a GRB," said Swift lead scientist Neil Gehrels of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.
I like to think that this "breakthrough observation"

Natura non facit saltum (Nature does not make leaps.) Charles Darwin's friend Thomas Huxley insisted that nature does take leaps. He was therefore labeled a "saltationist." |
