More akin to the Biblical sense of Creation We’re in agreement so far. I agree that our planet is bombarded every 13,000 to 26,000 years by cosmic rays, and I agree that the cosmic ray particles penetrating to ground level would significantly increase cell mutation rates. (That’s what Magnetic Reversals and Evolutionary Leaps is all about.) But rather than being caused by a “galactic superwave” as LaViolette postulates, I think it has to do with our weakened magnetic field, a weakened magnetic field created by a geomagnetic reversal or excursion, a weakened magnetic field that allows the already existing cosmic rays to bombard the earth. That’s what causes evolutionary leaps. It’s more akin to the Biblical sense of creation than to Darwin’s slow, stately orderly scenario. LaViolette says that galactic core explosions occur about every 13,000 - 26,000 years for major outbursts and more frequently for lesser events. He bases this on astronomical observations showing that the last major Galactic core explosion occurred as recently as 10,000 to 15,000 years ago. He says that data obtained from polar ice core samples show evidence of this cosmic ray event as well as other cosmic ray intensity peaks from earlier times, and that this indicates the occurrence of a global cosmic catastrophe in ancient times Again, I agree that astronomical observations do indicate periodic increases in cosmic ray intensity, and I agree that they provide evidence of a global catastrophe. Indeed, one of the papers that LaViolette refers to is one that I also refer to (Raisbeck, G. M., et al. "Evidence for two intervals of enhanced 10Be deposition in Antarctic ice during the Last Glacial Period." Nature, 326 (1987): 273). But I’ll stick to magnetic reversals - triggered by precession of the equinoxes – as being the cause. Otherwise, I find it hard to explain why ‘galactic superwaves’ would keep returning in sync with the equinoctial precession cycle. Interesting how we can find different driving mechanisms in the same data. However, as J. T., points out, the end result is
the same – a global catastrophe. |

Natura non facit saltum (Nature does not make leaps.) Charles Darwin's friend Thomas Huxley insisted that nature does take leaps. He was therefore labeled a "saltationist." |
